The Figure 8 Pools are a group of naturally formed rockpools located in Sydney’s Royal National Park. The hike can take up to 1.5 hours one way depending how fast you can climb rocks. In total, going there and back is 6km and it is categorised as a hard/difficult track.
It is definitely an adventure walk with a mix of terrain and you must come well prepared because the Royal National Park spans across a wide coastal area, with no mobile reception, bathrooms or commercial vendors. What to bring and wear
It is best to wear sports or active wear with your swimming clothes underneath because the hike can be intense. This includes a hat, T-shirt to cover your shoulders because you will get sunburnt, comfortable shorts and sneakers that can get dirty.
Imagine being in the middle of nowhere along a beautiful coast. Your packing list can include but not limited to:
- This printed instructions of how to get there
- Your backpack
- Sun glasses
- Swimming clothes
- Water bottles x2 – one for each way
- Snacks and food – You will need this because you use a lot of energy
- Basic first aid kit – just in case
- Camera/Mobile phone water-proof protective case
Driving to the Pools
The Figure 8 Pools are located in the Royal National Park, around a 1 hour drive from central Sydney. Enter “Garawarra Farm Carpark” in Google Maps to plan your drive there.
There is limited mobile reception so it is best to use a car GPS.
You can enter the address: Corner Sir Bertram Steven Drive and Garie Road. From there turn right straight away to enter Garawarra Farm Road which is a narrow one way gravel road.
Follow this road and you will see the parking lot on the right.
Hiking guide to the Figure 8 pools
At the car park, you must put on sunscreen, wear your hat and go to the portable toilets before embarking on your journey.
You will see a sign “Coast Walk” that says follow to the left and go towards the steep downhill walk through the bush.
Eventually the trees will part and you will get a gorgeous view of Burning Palms Beach on the right. In the distance, the Figure 8 pools are at the second headland.
Keep walking towards the water and you will see the track fork. Turn right at the fork. Soon the path meanders right and will lead you to Burning Palms Beach where you pass cottages.
Once you get to the beach, turn right and walk along the shore towards the first headland of rocks.
This is where it is leg day for you and you begin rock climbing or jumping.
Be agile and light on your feet. Bend your knees when landing on rocks and feel the rocks before climbing on it.
Once you’ve made it past the first headland, keep walking, following by some more rock scrambling. It feels like forever to be honest.
Once you have finally made it to the Figure 8 Pools, settle your stuff down against a shaded rock area and have your water-proof case for your phone or camera.
Waves crash unto the pools and it can get slippery when walking along the pools. Tread carefully!
Last tip, if there are a few people there, you need to be considerate and queue to get your solo photo in the Figure 8 Pool. You usually cannot stay in it and swim because people keep arriving and they all want to take photos.
The trek back is a lot faster because you are familiar with the journey and you improved in rock climbing skills.
